Matt Campbell Caught Saying "Soda" Instead of "Pop," Calling Into Question His Midwestern Roots

Penn State head coach Matt Campbell has reportedly used the word "soda", prompting a review of his background investigation where he claimed to be from the Midwest.

STATE COLLEGE, PA — Penn State head football coach Matt Campbell is facing serious questions about his personal history after reportedly referring to a carbonated beverage as "soda," a linguistic discrepancy that has called into question his candor during his background investigation prior to his hiring.

The incident allegedly occurred Tuesday afternoon when Campbell casually requested a "soda" during a team lunch, causing three assistant coaches to stop chewing and a nearby equipment manager to question what a soda is.

Campbell, who claims to have grown up in Ohio and spent years coaching at Iowa State, has long presented himself as a product of America's heartland. However, linguistic experts state that his recent vocabulary choices suggest something far different.

"You don't just accidentally say 'soda' after spending that much time in Iowa," explained a linguistics researcher who wished to remain anonymous. "That's not how any of this works. Someone needs to check his birth certificate. And possibly his casserole recipes."

The revelation has prompted an unofficial review into Campbell's answers on his background check and his supposed Midwestern credentials.

Among other concerns are unverified reports that Campbell once walked closely past a stranger without saying "ope," failed to apologize when someone else bumped into him, and ended a telephone conversation without saying "Alright, well, I'll let you go" at least three times.

"This isn't about football anymore," explained one concerned Big Ten observer. "This is about trust. If a man can spend years in Ames, Iowa, and still say 'soda,' what else is he hiding? Has he ever actually been to a fish fry? Does he even own a snow shovel?"

Some have begun questioning whether Campbell's entire Midwestern identity was carefully constructed, possibly using publicly available information about county fairs, church potlucks, and the proper pronunciation of "crick."

University officials are reportedly considering a mandatory cultural competency evaluation requiring Campbell to identify a proper hotdish and correctly navigate a four-way stop where everyone insists the other person go first.
